One of RSSB’s functions is to develop railway standards on behalf of the railway industry in Great Britain. Standards are an agreed way of doing something. They support the railway to function as a whole system, help manage risks, open markets, and reduce costs as the industry does not have to keep reinventing the wheel.
The Standards Management, Policy and Strategy team leads three key workstreams to support the Standards Directorate.
- The ‘standards management’ workstream looks after and implements the governance arrangements for the development of standards and monitors compliance across the Standards Directorate. It also develops, manages and seeks continuous improvement of internal policies, processes and procedures.
- The ‘standards delivery’ workstream leads on economic assessments and supports the development of business cases to change standards. It also provides technical expertise on regulatory policy to projects and at cross-industry committees.
- The ‘policy and strategy’ workstream sets the strategic direction for the future development of standards. Its expertise in regulatory policy helps influence changes to legislation related to standards by working closely with other industry bodies like the Department for Transport (DfT) and Office of Rail and Road (ORR).
Our graduate programme is designed to give you exposure and experience across all workstreams. In addition, over the course of 24 months, you will work across RSSB to gain a holistic insight into how we work to help keep Britain moving with safer, smarter rail.
By the end of the programme, you will have built knowledge, experience and a professional network that will help you with your career within RSSB and beyond.
The Artificial Intelligence (AI) space is exciting, fast moving, and with recent breakthroughs like ChatGPT, Bard, DallE-2 and MidJourney, it is becoming more accessible. Unlike traditional code, AI can function without being explicitly programmed for every possible situation and adapts in response to new data and experiences to improve efficacy over time. With the influx in recent technology, accessibility of AI will continue to accelerate, impacting all of us as individuals and the infrastructure systems and solutions society relies upon. Rail is no exception.
This graduate opportunity spans the two key RSSB teams of Research and Futures Lab and is primarily focussed on AI. Future Labs and Research Graduate will help the work we are about to undertake to support the sector in embracing and adapting to AI powered solutions for rail with greater confidence. In particular our work will look at how the regulation and standards being developed in the AI world can transition effectively and efficiently into rail and address rail specific challenges. You will work closely with the Director of Research and Director of Sector Strategy and their teams as RSSB delves into the exciting area of AI and starts to create useful guidance and support that the rail sector will need. This role will gain an understanding of how new technologies are embedded in the sector, what challenges needs to be overcome in this process, and the considerations and analysis to enable their safe introduction. They will work across mainly the Research and Futures Lab teams but will also get exposure to Information Management and Technology, System Safety and Health, and Standards teams.
The Trainer is accountable for delivering the external training activities that RSSB offers to the railway industry in the UK and internationally. They will work with subject matter experts and lead on delivering relevant learning interventions to help deliver against one of the four RSSB Corporate Objectives: Business Growth.
The primary focus of this role is training facilitation/delivery. This role will require someone who is incredibly passionate about Learning and Development and is comfortable delivering training in face-to-face and remote settings 2-4 days a week. Travel will be required to deliver the training at client locations across the UK.
The Lead Data Engineer will lead agile data engineering activities as a technical leader, delivering data and insights products to the rail industry.
You will understand the business and IT strategy to align technical solutions with outcomes, develop APIs and integrations to transfer data between systems and deliver aggregated data solutions.
You will develop both quick prototypes and high-quality products, judging which is needed. The role will also coach data engineers and undertake code reviews to ensure the team can continue to deliver sustainable solutions.
