Overview

RSSB’s Risk and Safety Intelligence (RSI) team is at the forefront of rail safety. By analysing data, assessing risk and developing industry-leading tools and guidance, the team provides the insight that helps rail operators make informed decisions and improve safety across the GB rail network.

We are now recruiting a Safety Risk Analyst (Known internally as Risk and Safety Intelligence Analyst) to join our team on a permanent basis. This is an opportunity to use your analytical skills to support safety improvement across the GB rail industry. Working with analysts, health and safety professionals, and technical specialists, you will transform data into valuable insights that help inform decisions and improve safety outcomes across the rail network. Through your work, you will contribute to the delivery of the Rail Health and Safety Strategy and help strengthen RSSB's reputation as a centre of excellence in risk management, analysis, and data-driven insights.

This role is based at our Fenchurch Avenue office, with hybrid working available. The closing date for applications is 4th October 2026. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and understand changes in railway-wide risk using event data from RSSB’s Safe Insights platform and other sources to help decision makers understand health and safety performance and identify and prioritise issues.
  • Identify actionable health and safety insights through and by evaluating evidence from sources such as accident investigation reports and operational feedback.
  • Create engaging data-driven narratives through the production of dashboards, verbal presentations, or written reports on risk and safety performance for a range of stakeholders and industry groups.
  • Plan and deliver the development and update of sections of our Safety Risk Model, which quantifies the risk associated with railway operations and maintenance.
  • Review the quality of safety event data and support data improvement activity.
  • Support the development of
  • Engage with our industry members to understand their health and safety problems and provide them with information and support to help solve them.
  • Work with colleagues from across RSSB to develop and maintain key products and services and support their application

Qualifications

Essential: 

  • Possesses analysis skills built on:
    • Technical foundations, as might be gained through a degree in mathematics, science, engineering or a related discipline or through the equivalent experience.
    • Experience of applying analysis skills to real-world problems.
    • Python, SQL, Power BI, Microsoft Excel.
    • An inquisitive mind and an ability to quickly understand complex information and apply analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
    • Strong data visualisation and storytelling skills, with the ability to communicate trends, risks, and emerging issues through engaging and evidence-based narratives.
  • Communicates effectively and shares thoughts and ideas through methods appropriate to the 
  • Adapts and responds effectively when embracing new opportunities, change and in navigating 
  • Actively contributes as part of a team and works towards achieving team goals and 
  • Takes responsibility and demonstrates accountability in completing tasks and achieving objectives, actively seeking to resolve problems and identify opportunities.
  • Committed to customer service and placing customer satisfaction at the heart of our success to ensure we deliver against our shared goals.
  • Builds effective professional relationships with stakeholders, understanding their unique goals and motivations, gaining credibility and effectively influencing to achieve desired outcomes.

Desirable:

  • Experience of safety related work, or a knowledge of or interest in these
  • Experience of work related to railway operations and engineering, or a knowledge of or interest in the GB railway.
  • Experience applying statistical methods, developing mathematical models, and using large language models (LLMs) and other AI-assisted tools to support data analysis, insight generation, and decision-making
